Tampere University, which is the merger of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology, brings technology and social sciences together in a unique way which enables research groups conduct multidisciplinary research across institutional boundaries. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is a unique combination of expertise in natural sciences, applied sciences and engineering sciences. In natural sciences, strategic profile is made up of three thematic research areas: Light-based technologies, bio- and circular economy and computational science. In engineering sciences, thematic research areas focus on the development, production and management of industrial systems and processes from multiple perspectives. Activities of the faculty entail both fundamental and applied research. Research interests cover topics ranging from sustainable development, energy and the environment to new materials, autonomous machines and system design. Faculty also engages in extensive research collaboration with industry, and a large number of companies have been spun out from our research.
Areas of research of Mechatronics Research Group (MRG) fall under the umbrella of mechanical engineering and life-cycle engineering. Research activities in these areas focus on complex machine systems in demanding operation environments and applications. Main research areas are: Aircraft engineering; Aerial, surface and underwater autonomous and unmanned systems; RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) -engineering; Heavy duty mechatronic systems engineering and Subsea/off-shore systems engineering. MRG works in very close and longterm collaboration with industry and governmental bodies and agencies.
